Back at headquarters, Will rushed off to the autopsy room to meet Beren, and I ambled down to the cafeteria. I didn’t feel like being by myself at home, so I magicked my iPad to myself and read—I had checked with Liv in case she needed my help, but the answer was no.

After a couple of hours—almost a whole book, three cappuccinos, a toasted cheese-and-tomato sandwich, and a chocolate muffin—my phone dinged. Will. Finally. I magicked my iPad back home and threw my rubbish in the bin, then headed to Will’s office for a small meeting. At least I had clearance for magicking things back and forth. Agents could, too, but any witch guests would’ve been blocked by one of the security spells. It wouldn’t do to have a criminal or stranger turning up, getting cleared through security, then magicking a weapon to themselves.

I knocked but didn’t wait for an answer before opening the door to his little waiting room. Beren’s voice filtered out from Will’s office. I went to the open door and poked my head in. “Hey.”

Will grinned. “Come in and have a seat. We’ve got some news.” Ooh, news. I liked news, as long as it helped us get where we wanted.

James was also in attendance. “Hey, Lily.”

I smiled in reply as I sat next to Beren. James was on a chair on the other side of him, and Will sat across from us. There wasn’t much social chit-chat since this was an ongoing investigation, and we were at work. Not that the guys weren’t friendly, but everyone was in work mode, so I took their cue and stayed quiet. Big of me, I know.

Will sat back in his leather office chair and folded his arms in a relaxed manner. “I’ll let you do the honours, B, since you’re the one who did the autopsy.”

“Okay, thanks.” He stood and went around to Will’s side of the desk and stood facing James and me. He smiled. “We found more than I thought we would. The microchip had been removed with magic, and the cat’s heart had been stopped with magic. I found a magic signature on the body, and both spells were still there—faint but enough to decipher. I’ve put all that into our system. It’s the same signature Will found at all the previous locations, so we can surmise that we’re dealing with one witch. How that witch is carrying out these crimes so fast is another matter. But at this stage, we’re hunting one perpetrator.”

James leaned forward and rested his forearms on the table. “That makes things simpler. What else have you got?”

“Not much. I did look at the contents of Mervin’s stomach, and I’ve given them to the lab. If he’s eaten cat food, we might be able to at least find out what type. It’s a long shot, but if it matches what the criminal has at home, it’s just another evidency mark against his or her name in court.”

James raised his brow. “Did you just say ‘evidency?’”

Beren shrugged.
