Passive Imagination

Your conditioned identity—with all its history and limiting patterns—is encoded in your subconscious mind. So it’s important to know how to understand and talk to your subconscious, using its own language. The subconscious mind communicates through images and symbols, not words or reason.

Passive imagination is the practice of receiving messages from the subconscious. When you set aside the analytical mind and turn your attention within—away from the world of mental chatter and sensory impressions—you make yourself available to a whole new mode of perception. You get to understand the psychology of your inner child and why it built the box.

There are many therapeutic modalities that use passive imagination to establish direct contact with the subconscious. Some of them are Internal Family Systems (IFS), Voice Dialogue, art therapy, Jungian dreamwork, the “Big Mind” process, and some forms of somatic therapy. In the world of spirituality, several wisdom traditions make use of passive imagination, although with a different purpose—such as Shamanic journeying, prayer, plant medicine, and some forms of meditation.

The way many of these techniques work is by allowing your subconscious to speak to you through the medium of inner parts, archetypes, or voices. To simplify things, let’s call them our “parts.” You are typically asked by a practitioner of these methodologies to get in contact with the part of you who is afraid of moving forward, or the part of you who is the inner critic, or the part of you who is feeling vulnerable and not confident. You are inviting the subconscious to give you access to that part, that “mode” of yourself, so you can learn from it, negotiate with it, or help it transform.

Your parts can show up as an image or a voice in your mind, as a sensation somewhere in your body, or even as a subtle inner knowingness. These are not consciously created nor a product of fantasy. Rather, they are real psychological constructs that are actively influencing your life and are now given the opportunity to show up to you via the medium of imagination.

For the purpose of experiencing more self-confidence, this process helps you get to know all parts of you that are involved with self-doubt, fear, anxiety, shaming, and the other obstacles to confidence. Then, through compassionate inner dialogue, you will:

• show gratitude to them, befriend them, and open a channel of communication

• understand what role they perform and what brought them into existence

• get each part to trust you, so you can reclaim their power and perform the same role, if still needed, in a wiser and more conscious manner. If that is not possible, at least ask the part what it needs from you so that it can give you some space.
