LIVE WISELY

Your parents care very deeply about how you turn out. It’s not enough for them to know that you’re healthy and well provided for. They also want you to be a good person—a person of integrity, respectability, and wisdom.

Look at these words from Solomon’s book:

The father of a righteous man has great joy; he who has a wise son delights in him. May your father and mother be glad; may she who gave you birth rejoice! (Proverbs 23:24-25)

A wise son brings joy to his father, but a foolish son grief to his mother. (Proverbs 10:1)

The fact that you’re reading this book and trying to become a wiser person is, in a way, an act of honoring your parents. Searching for wisdom in any area of life is a way of honoring your parents. Trying hard to follow Jesus by making choices that honor God at school, at church, at home, and in the deep privacy of your own mind—that’s honoring your parents.

Even if your folks don’t seem to notice or care how you live, these verses confirm that your parents will be honored if you learn to live wisely, if you become a man or woman of integrity, if you follow after God. Becoming an honorable person honors your parents.

We could fill many chapters with ideas for how to honor your mom and dad, but you can use God’s wisdom to search those out on your own. Let’s move on and tackle some of the harder questions that teenagers and their parents face—such as how to get along with each other when conflict arises.
