Money Wisdom

Having money in the bank gives one a sense of Buddhistic calm.

– Ayn Rand (1905–1982)

Money is usually overrated, yet we live in a money-oriented society. As the Beatles’ song reminds us, it can’t buy us love. And as the Bible tells us, “The love of money is the root of all evil… ” (1 Timothy 6:10).

People like me tend to underrate money. As a student of the humanities, and a religious one to boot, I put money way down on my list of values. Moreover, I had an early prejudice against money. First, my father was a businessman. Dinner-table discussions often turned on how much—in dollar terms—someone was worth. By contrast, I tended to value people on how nice, interesting, or funny they were.

Second, our family was Jewish. Early on I learned that Jews were supposed to be interested only in money. Well, it did seem that way at our house. So, I took a private vow that money wasn’t going to be my idol in life. Later, when my family made sure I got the best education money could buy, I felt pressure to go into business or another high-paying profession. How disappointed my parents were when their son the doctor chose to operate on nineteenth-century American fiction!

Now in my late-70s, I am content that I did not enter a career just to make money. On the other hand, I wish I had been a better steward of what I did make. A more balanced view of money would have served me and my family better.
