How to setup wireshark to monitor Internet traffic on a LAN network.

This tutorial explains how to setup wireshark on a LAN network to monitor internet traffic. A switch which supports port mirroring is required for the purpose. On a LAN

network, internet is setup using a NAT router or a Proxy Server. A basic topology diagram is shown below. All traffic destined to the internet from the users on the LAN network would flow through the LAN interface of the router. The technique uses the port mirroring feature on the switch, which would send all traffic travelling through port E1, which is internet traffic to the port E0, where wireshark can capture all the packets and filters used for appropriate analysis. The configuration to setup port mirroring on a Cisco switch to achieve this requirement is provided below.
