TOSSING AND TURNING

Back at home, Walter couldn’t sleep. His head span, the chaos threatening to overwhelm him. He’d done nothing wrong. If he was guilty of anything, it was human kindness. He went out of his way to be nice to people, he tried to do the best by everyone, yet despite his good intentions, life was about to fuck him, and fuck him hard.

The car park managers would arrive and find not one, but two groups of wino women living on site. The sixth floor looked like a war zone, which was causing reduced customer traffic. The whole rotten incident would probably cost him his job.

As if fate hadn’t taken a big enough shit on him, the local porn baron and his wannabe mobsters were after him for something which was out of his control. He’d never agreed to protect the car, but now he was in debt to the tune of ten grand unless he could find the mysterious sex linctus. To top things off, Lovespuds’ Bentley was still parked in a designated No Parking area.

Writhing in his bed, sweat beading on his body, Walter struggled to see a way out of the mess. Even if he kept his job, he wouldn’t be able to work, not if Charlie and his boys put him in hospital.

There was one possibility: he could run away. Auntie Mary ran a boarding house in Bridlington, and she was always moaning about the lack of good staff. He could move in with her, do the laundry, make beds and wash-up. No one would think about looking for him there. He’d just disappear, leaving all his problems behind. But it wouldn’t be that easy. It never was.

Unable to rest, Walter dressed. After a quick round of toast and peanut butter, he ventured out into the dawn gloom, determined to rescue something from the clusterfuck of a day.

The roads were quiet, the city still asleep, and Walter began to feel some semblance of hope creep into his thoughts. However, his optimism was short-lived. Arriving at the car park, he could hear the drunken caterwauling of Gloria and her friends. Having consumed all the alcohol, the wino women were out of control.

Their shouts and abusive cries were indecipherable, a mix of slurred words and nonsensical sounds, and their limbs windmilled in drunken aggression. It was clear any chance of a sensible conversation was many hours away, but time was not on his side. Approaching Gloria, he tried to keep his questioning simple.

‘Gloria, did you or your friends take anything from that car?’ he asked, pointing towards the Bentley.

‘Got a smoke, mister?’ she slurred, her eyes rolling as she struggled to focus on his face.

‘Gloria, it’s me, Walter,’ he said.

She blinked a few times and shook her head, before taking another look.

‘I love you, Walter,’ she muttered. ‘Have you got a smoke?’

‘I don’t smoke, Gloria.’

‘What about a little drinkee?’ she asked.

‘Gloria, I need to know if you took anything from that car. Did you take something thinking it was booze?’

‘Booze?’ Gloria repeated, her eyes lighting up.
