One story of an early meeting between Christopher and Winnie was recounted many years after it occurred by the late Laurence Irving, a friend of Milne’s from the Garrick Club in London. He wrote to The Times of London to say that Christopher had been with his daughter and her friend when they visited Winnie the Bear, and that Christopher had taken a step or two back when the bear made her way toward them in the tunnel. In later years, Christopher said that he had felt anxious viewing the polar bears “… but maintained that he had never been afraid of Winnie herself and had revisited this remarkable lady on subsequent trips to the Zoo.”

There is some question as to the accuracy of Irving’s observation, and Ann Thwaite discounts it, reasoning that the date attached to the meeting does not fit with the timing of the stories.

When at the Zoo with his father, Christopher spent time with Winnie the Bear. These visits to see her were particularly exciting for the little boy. He adored her and wanted “to go straight to the animal [he] loved the most and stay there.” Winnie was friendly and engaging and they wrestled and played; Christopher rode on her back, as did many of the children who visited her.
