30LEADER is a French acronym of ‘Liaison Entre Actions de Développement de l’Économie Rurale’ which (according to the DEFRA website) ‘roughly translates as “liaison among actors in rural economic development”.’

32Cabernet Cortis is a variety developed at Freiburg State Winegrowing Institute in Baden in 1982 and released in 2004. It is a crossing of Cabernet Sauvignon and Solaris. Solaris is a Vitis amurensis crossing.

33Theale Vineyard was on a sloping bank formed from the brick and rubble waste that resulted when Laithwait’s built their last but one office. This was planted with 703 Chardonnay vines in 1998 at 2 by 1 metres and was partly looked after by the employees who worked in the offices nearby. As I recall it they ‘adopted’ vines, pruned them, ate their lunches beneath them, kept them neat and tidy and had an informal competition to see whose vine had the most grapes. The Theale Blanc de Blancs wines were made at Ridgeview and were of remarkably good quality, winning several medals and awards. The 2003 Founder’s Reserve came seventh in the 2007 Effervescents du Monde competition. I served a bottle to a group of MW students and they all had it down as a top-quality Champagne retailing in the £40–£60 category. When Laithwaite’s sold the offices in 2016, they offered the vines to anyone who wanted them and they ended up in Tiverton in Devon. Nobody thought that 18-year-old vines would survive the journey, but miraculously only 20 died and the others are back and cropping.

34To put this in perspective, the IWSC had awarded their English Wine Trophy to sparkling wines before: the 1991 trophy went to the 1989 Rock Lodge Impresario Sparkling, the 1992 trophy to the 1989 Throwley Chardonnay Sparkling and the 1993 trophy to the 1987 Carr Taylor Vintage Sparkling.
