“Be careful,” Laila said. “They really hurt if you get pricked by one.”

Max nodded.

They continued to scamper over the rocks, slowing down only to avoid stepping on the wildflowers growing in between the moss-covered rocks.

At the top of the cliff, the lighthouse towered above them. The waves crashed against the shore below. Laila led the way toward the small house that stood beside the tower. When they reached the front step, she nodded nervously at Max and Sofia, then knocked on the door.

Max held his breath as the door creaked open. Light spilled across the doorstep, and an old man with weathered skin and a head of bushy white hair stood before them.

“Yes?” he said. His voice cracked.

“We’re here to talk to you about the lighthouse,” said Laila, stepping forward.

“We need you to turn the light on!” Max jumped in.
