For White: - The Torre Attack

This is another example of where White ensures that his queen’s bishop isn’t trapped behind a pawn on e3 (delaying its involvement in the attack) but that it’s posted to a commanding position straight away.

Typically, the first moves of The Torre would be; 1 d4 Nf6 2 Nf3 e6 3 Bg5. This bishop immediately puts pressure on Black and fights for control of e4.

White can develop quickly, aim to control the centre and attack in any part of the board.

It avoids a great deal of the ‘book’ that’s associated with an early c4 advance, which is a very good move (since it makes it harder for Black to play d5 to reinforce his control of e4) but it doesn’t develop a piece and events might prove later that it would have been better placed on c3. White normally positions his queen’s knight at d2 and his other bishop at d3.
