Chapter Twenty

Kit

I help Willow up on the back of the vehicle then hop in the front.

"Hold tight."

Her arms wrap around my midsection and squeeze. I place one hand over hers and use the other to steer as we ride off down the long driveway. I don't ride fast; I'm enjoying having her arms around me. All too soon, I see the light on in my dad's cabin and pull right up to the porch.

"Are you and your dad close?" She asks as I help her down.

"We're… getting there. It's complicated. I'll explain more to you later if you want to hear it. He's a good man, though. A good father," I admit.

"Good. I'm happy to hear that." Her sugary sweet voice makes my lips twitch in a semblance of a smile. She's happy that I have a parent who loves me. I shake my head in disbelief at her compassion.

"C'mon." I take her hand and guide her up the porch steps before opening the door.

Dad is at the stovetop stirring whatever he’s making for dinner. It smells delicious.

"Hey, you two. Dinner's all ready. Venison chili. I hope you like it, Willow." Dad nods his head at me in greeting as Willow and I take our boots off at the door.

"Smells spicy and yummy." Willow bites her lip nervously as I guide her to the table.

"You like spicy foods?" Dad starts to ladle the soup into three separate bowls for us.

"I like food in general." She grins, "I can eat pretty much anything without complaint. My mom's chef is always making me try new things, I think that's why I enjoy a variety of foods."

"Well, after this I have banana pudding for dessert."

"Fuck yeah," I mutter. Willow nudges my shoulder. I glance at her and she's trying not to smile. "What? I like pudding."

"Potty mouth."

I lean in and whisper, "You love my mouth." Her eyes widen in surprise, her chest moving rapidly as her breathing gets heavier. She's just too easy to rile up.

Dad brings over the bowls of chili. "So how do you like the cabin, Willow?"

"Oh, it's really cozy. I could spend all day right in front of that fireplace. It's really a lovely cabin."

"I admit that one is special. That's why I rent it out, don't want to keep all that beauty for myself. I’m glad you’re enjoying it."

"Kit has been a great help as well. Hell of a cook, that one."

I squeeze her hand in appreciation, a gesture Dad notices, and he gives me a knowing look. "I'm an alright cook," I mutter.

"Kit always liked to help in the kitchen, even when he was a young boy. He gets that from his mother, Sofia." I roll my eyes at him and eat my chili.

"So how long have you lived here in Alaska?" Willow asks.

"Dad's been here for twelve years." I answer for him. I'm not sure why, probably because I don't want him bringing up anything I haven't told Willow yet. Especially about James. Making eye contact with him, I shake my head no.
