The press conference turned into a fiasco.

The whole situation is another example of how much the American criminal justice system has changed in the last seventy years. Guilty pleas are almost always conducted in a courtroom, especially if the defendant is being held in custody on a charge as serious as murder, and in many states the press is not allowed to record the proceedings with cameras. In the states where the press is allowed to record the proceedings, they are not allowed to ask questions until the hearing is over and the defendant/convicted is being led away.
