“You were going to tell me something, remember?” Molly was sitting with her friend Lisa in the teachers’ lounge. Lisa had remarked that Molly looked tired, and Molly had been about to tell her why she looked tired, when the Valentino of higher education, a parody-macho basketball coach named Brody, came over and started flirting with Molly and Lisa. He’d finally left.

In a way, Molly was glad Brody had come over. Maybe this wasn’t something she should share with somebody. If word got around school. . . .

The bell rang.

Lisa smiled. “The gods don’t want me to hear your story.”

“Apparently not.”

Lisa stared at Molly a long moment. “You sure you’re all right?”

“I’m fine. Just tired.”

“Well, if you want to talk about anything, give me a call at home tonight after eight-thirty—you know, when I get the little monsters into their cells.”

Lisa had three children. She wasn’t exaggerating when she called them “monsters.” Molly had been at Lisa’s house before. The three kids were basically out of control. They were going to be outright ogres when they reached their teen years.

“Thanks. Maybe I will give you a call tonight.”
