During his travels Franck was welcomed and helped by many people, and his account highlights numerous examples of extraordinary camaraderie, sociability, and enterprise among his fellow homeless wanderers. However, his odyssey was also fraught with danger. Strangers, especially destitute strangers, were often treated with suspicion or outright hostility, and Franck was in peril of his life on several occasions.

Franck Encounters Buddhism

A Vagabond Journey remains an enthralling and informative read today, though the modern reader’s sensibilities will be jolted by the casual racism of the period, reflected in the vocabulary and actions of some of Franck’s associates. Franck himself was sensitive to different cultural norms and values, as illustrated in his account of a visit to the Buddhist “Temple of the Tooth” in Kandy, Ceylon. Franck was taken to the temple by a local Sinhalese boy who knew English. The two were shown around by the head monk, the boy translating the monk’s explanations about various precious items, including the tooth relic of the Buddha housed in its nest of elaborate caskets (see Figure 7.1).
