A few of De Sitter’s students
Jan Woltjer Jr. (1891–1946)
Woltjer studied in Amsterdam and Leiden. From 1913 onwards he worked at the Observatory in Leiden. He received his doctor’s degree with De Sitter as supervisor in 1918 on his dissertation Investigations in the Theory of Hyperion, Saturn’s eighth moon. He became assistant, lecturer and professor of theoretical astronomy, at first to relieve De Sitter after his appointment as director of the Observtory. After 1925 he transferred his field of research from celestial mechanics to the theory of star atmospheres and the inside of stars. He died as a consequence of undernourishment during the so-called winter of starvation12 1944–1945 at the end of World War II (Brouwer 1947).
