Small, brown bird with dark head, pale underparts and distinctive, yellow vent. Black head has a small crest, giving a peaked appearance. Occurs in pairs or family groups. May become tame in gardens and parks. Call is a series of liquid whistles, but the raspy ‘cheet-cheet-cheet’ alarm call is better known. Forages in pairs or groups for small insects and berries. Lays 2 or 3 eggs in a neat cup attached to a branch with spider web.

Best viewing: widespread in suitable habitat
