I darted ahead in the article as Dylan and Arla held their breath. They leaned in close trying to find a name. I quickly began to read.

On the evening of July 1, 1931, a fire broke out at Jarvason’s on the outskirts of town. The local popular garage and dry goods store had been a landmark in the community for over ten years. Owner John Jarvason (39), his son, O.C. (14) and friend, Rory McDougal (13) are missing and presumed dead.

“Rory McDougal,” I repeated. “That’s our guy!”

“He disappeared that night along with O.C. We know they were hiding out for days.” Arla opened the journal again and began to page through the writing, “What happened to you, guys?” she whispered.

I scanned the rest of the article. “The paper claims that Rory’s mom last saw them together when they went to check on O.C.’s dad. She said she didn’t know why except that O.C. was upset and had brought the Indian woman and his little sister.” That confirmed what Rory wrote in the journal.”

I carefully opened the paper looking for any other news. “Maybe she didn’t go to Duluth to see her sister.”

“She could’ve heard about the fire and stayed to find him,” noted Dylan. “Or the bus didn’t leave till late and the reporter found her before she left.” He thumbed through the newspaper with me. “Is there a later paper?”

“No, this is it, and why was this paper stuck in the wall?” I carefully folded the paper back into its creased quarters. “Who put this paper in the wall and what connection did they have with Rory?”

“Something happened to them.” Arla got up from the table to fill a pan with water and sat it on the stove to boil. “We may never find out. Someone killed them. Rory was making a lot of money transporting whiskey across the border. Capone didn’t mind him running the risk to get the liquor. He was just greedy and wanted it all, that’s why he threatened O.C.’s dad.”

I got up from the table to get some bowls out. “Capone wasn’t a nice guy. What if he heard that Rory was going to sell to Baby Face Nelson? He could’ve killed him as a warning to sell just to him.”

Dylan was in the fridge again. He pulled out the last two eggs and bread. He opened the bread bag. There were only a few slices left. “The Dylan special?” he asked. We nodded our heads to agree. “He could’ve been killed by Capone’s competitors or even by other runners across the lake that didn’t want the competition or even captured by the law.”

“I know. He became a pirate and lived happily-ever-after,” Arla taunted Dylan.

“I don’t think that happened,” I said. I did the honor of putting the noodles in the boiling water and mentally counted off three minutes before pouring the spice packs into the mix. Dylan cracked the eggs into a bowl and scrambled them. He tossed them into the soup while Arla stirred quickly.
