Packrat

Rats are larger than mice. The packrat has a long tail

and large ears and eyes and is also called a white-

throated woodrat. It can live in very dry places, as

long as there are prickly pear or cholla cacti nearby.

Packrats live in dens (also called middens) that they

make out of twigs, cactus and other plant parts,

rocks, and even animal dung. Their nests are also

protected from predators by having spiny cacti

pieces as part of the midden. Packrat dens

have been discovered under trees and

among low-growing cacti, such as

prickly pear.
