Chapter Fourteen
Jude
There were two cop cars in the parking lot at Karisâs apartment building when I pulled up later that night. This wasnât the first time Iâd noticed cruisers in the lot; it was the kind of place cops parked to just let their presence be known I guess. Tonight, it made me uneasy. Maybe it was that Karis had been distracted all night, or maybe the knowledge she was keeping part of herself from me was starting to really get to me. I knew something was up with her mom, who hadnât shown her face once since returning from her trip. But Karis was a closed book there and Iâd pretty much given up on asking.
It was dark out as we made our way up the stairs, Karis going slowly with her crutches and me behind her. She stopped as soon as we hit her floor, I figured to readjust her crutches, but when she remained frozen I followed her gaze. Two policemen were standing in front of her door. They were in conversation, but one of them noticed us, and the other turned to follow his gaze.
Several seconds passed before Karis moved, slowly approaching as the officers took us in. When it was clear which door we were going to, one of the officers spoke up.
âMiss Jackson?â
Karis looked up at the tall Black man. âYes, sir.â
âIs this your apartment?â
âYes.â
âIâm Officer Hooper and this is Officer Riley. One of your neighbors called, reported a robbery. Know anything about that?â
Karis answered without hesitation. âJust now? There was a robbery?â She was acting totally confused, but then again, maybe it wasnât acting. I mean, I was confused and I knew about the robbery too. It didnât make sense theyâd show up two weeks later. When had the neighbor reported it?
âCall came in an hour ago. It was from a Mrs. Kruger, who lives in the building across the way on the same floor. Saw it from the window.â
âHow? What did she say?â Karisâs voice shook and I knew her fear was genuine because I felt it too. For her. My hand went around her waist, hoping to comfort her but not knowing if she was even aware of my presence right now.
Officer Hooper turned to the younger guy, Officer Riley, who answered the question. âSaid she watched a man crouch over the door like he was picking a lock. It was already dark and she couldnât see him well, but he was dressed in baggy black clothes with a baseball hat pulled low.â
The older officer jumped in. âI had a chance to interview Mrs. Kruger after we got here. She said he got the door open after a couple minutes, went inside, and was in there for maybe ten minutes. He had on a backpack when he left, and his head was down. He ran outta there and disappeared down the sidewalk without a car. Heâd been gone a few minutes by the time we got here.â
âWe havenât been inside yet,â Officer Riley said.
