Chapter Fourteen

“Watch me!” Quinn was like a little tornado as she ran through the Jamisons’ house to their back patio. She looked around, making sure her audience was paying attention.

“Let’s see it, kid,” Dad encouraged.

“Uncle Wes?” Quinn sassed, tapping her foot.

“Yep, I’m all yours.” He turned around from the grill after flipping a burger.

Kwabena called from the other side of the pool, where he stood with the football we’d been tossing, “I can see you!”

She made a little huff and stood perfectly straight, positioning herself in the middle of the massive deck. Pointing one toe out she glanced behind her, full of concentration, and raised her arms in the air. Quinn was drawing it out, imitating the gymnasts she’d seen on TV. A few more deep breaths. Finally, she arched her back and completed a pretty impressive back walkover.

We whistled and cheered dutifully as she raised her arms and did wrist rotations and walked in a slow circle. Kofi came out a moment later. “What’d I miss?”

Quinn went through her performance again, and then a third time when Cole and Dash wandered out, and a fourth when Mom, Aunt Zoe and Zane joined us. Our two families got together like this all the time. Granny B was too worn out to join tonight, not that she would ever admit it. Every one of us had other places we could be right now, other people we could be hanging with, but being together was better than just about anything else. It was where we were most comfortable. There was no way I was the only one who felt that; the warmth was a collective energy between us.

This dinner hadn’t even been planned until we realized most of us were already over here, but now eleven of us sat around, joking and laughing. My grandpa, Dad’s dad, would probably be here if it hadn’t been so last minute.

My phone was blowing up. It was on silent but kept lighting up with texts or calls I was ignoring for the moment. Kwabena had gone out on Friday when school ended, but neither of us had gone to any parties since. I was ready to hit one up, if only to shake this Karis Jackson obsession off me.

Kofi got up from the table and put a hand on Zane’s shoulder. “I’m meeting up with tennis team friends for a second dinner, guys, save me some of your brownies, will you, Zane?”

Zane had a lot of hobbies, and one of them was baking, or decorating baked goods to be more specific.

“Which body part do you want?” Zane asked.

“Whichever part has the red hots.”

“You got it.”

The brownie platter in the center of the patio table was decorated in pieces of candy depicting a robot wielding a tennis racket.

“Where you headed?” Kwabena asked Kofi as we followed him inside after clearing the dinner plates. Zane called after us to bring the dessert plates out.

“And ice cream!” Aunt Zoe added.
