FIFTEEN

Hallam had a few extra aches and pains when he hauled himself out of bed the next morning. Diving onto concrete sidewalks wasn't the easiest thing in the world on old bones.

Maybe the impact had jarred something loose in his brain, though.

As on the previous night, he had spent some long, sleepless hours trying to come up with a handle on this case. He had found out quite a bit in his poking around the day before, and he didn't doubt that there were quite a few folks with a motive for wanting Allan Wallace dead. And there were at least as many who wouldn't mind seeing Elton Forbes framed for a double murder.

Despite that, he wouldn't have felt like he was making any real progress if it hadn't been for a couple of things.

First was the incident at the Waterhole. If he had let that supposedly drunk cowboy push him into a fight, he might well have wound up dead. The man had looked like the type that someone could hire for just that sort of dirty work. And in the confusion, the fellow could've slipped away from the speakeasy.

Then, of course, there was the attempt on his life at the temple. Hallam didn't believe for a second that the shots had been meant for Alice Grey or anyone else.

Nope, he was the bull's-eye on somebody's target, and he didn't like the feeling one damn bit. The way he figured it, he had seen or heard something important, something he wasn't even aware that he knew yet.

Now he was going to have to keep digging, in self-preservation if nothing else.

Alice had been mighty upset the night before, which was easy to understand. She wasn't used to guns going off, especially in her direction. Hallam had calmed her down the best he could and sent her home, assuring her that nobody else would bother her. To make certain of that, he had followed her in the flivver and watched until she was safely inside her little bungalow a few miles from the temple. Then he had gone home to try—mostly unsuccessfully—to get some sleep himself.

Staring up at the ceiling of his darkened bedroom, he had kept seeing a face that was by now familiar to him, though he had seen it in the flesh for only a few seconds.

Emilie.

Dark hair, soft, shining, parted in the middle to fall in gentle waves around her face. Wide blue eyes… the mirror of an innocent soul? She was young, no more than twenty, Hallam would guess.

About the same age as Nola McGuire.

And about the same age as that other actress, the one that Forbes had converted to help start all of Wallace's troubles. What was her name? Miller? Judy Miller?

Three young women, Hallam thought. Young and pretty. Were there any other links between them? Nola McGuire and Judy Miller had both been exploited by Wallace, who had taken advantage of their ambition to star in the movies.

Could the same thing have happened to
