CHAPTER 22

ALLISON

It had been over a week since our meeting, and I still hadn’t been allowed to leave yet. I felt like a tigress, ready to pounce at any sudden movement. The guys were feeling it too. Even Huxley had gotten his cast off yesterday and was adjusting to the boot.

Vyk had introduced me to the library downstairs the morning after making the plan. It was full of books, but most of them weren’t really my taste―what can I say, I’m just not interested in The Classics. David showed me a small gym downstairs next to the library a day later. There was a treadmill and some free-hand weights. Nothing too crazy, but enough to at least let me feel my blood pumping. Blue-eyes came home most nights with folders of papers and contracts to go over. A few nights ago, Huxley asked me to look over them with him, and it was nice to feel needed again. I was good at catching Blue-eyes’s mistakes, earning me one of his stony stares when I handed it back and told him to fix his shit.

I pretty well had free rein of the house to explore on the condition that I stayed out of their individual bedrooms and didn’t go outside. One of their landscaping crews was doing updates and they didn’t want me raising questions. I stayed true to my word and didn’t go into their rooms, but I had opened the doors to each just to peek inside, even discovering a whole entertainment room. Huxley showed me how to use the wired speaker system through the house―because that was normal. He gave me free rein of the music during the day when it was just the two of us.

At night, they were still taking shifts as to who was sitting up while I slept in an attempt to keep my nightmares at bay, but had given me a few hours alone here and there. If I had a nightmare, I was at least met with someone running into my room to ease me back to the real world.

Vyk would sit next to me in the bed, propped against the headboard. By the time he coaxed me awake, whatever book he was reading would be cast to the side.

With Huxley, I would wake to him trailing his fingers through my hair. I didn’t have the heart to tell him that the feeling made my dreams of Devon more intense. I think he was sleeping in the bed with me some nights, on top of the comforter, but he was always wide awake by the time I was pulled out of a screaming fit.

David would sit in the chair next to the bed, shaking my shoulder gently and offering an ‘Shh, angel, it’s just a bad dream. Go back to sleep’, as I lulled back into the darkness.

Then there was Blue-Eyes. I would wake covered in sweat and muscles tight like I had been fighting in my sleep to look over and see him in the same spot as always.
