Nicola walked home, thoughts spinning round her head. She’d been right, there was a lot of energy emanating from the bed. It remained to be seen whether any of it was any use.

As she walked, her steps slow and measured, the other idea that had crossed her mind that morning came back to her. If Sean could communicate with her, was it possible she could communicate with him? She didn’t see how, not really, but that didn’t mean she wouldn’t consider it. How far she had come, she thought with a flicker of surprise, from where her dreams had almost destroyed her.

Back in her apartment, early though it was, she poured a glass of wine. She’d no idea whether Tom was coming to spend yet another night but she wasn’t going to allow him to dictate her day. With that thought, she stripped where she stood and, walking over to the balcony door, slid it open. Cold wine, colder breeze, within minutes she was shivering but still she stood.

Inside, she decided against a shower, wrapping herself instead in a soft throw, and curling up on the sofa. Switching on the television, she sat and watched a series of forgettable movies, switching the television off when she heard the buzzer. She waited, in the dark and quiet, until it sounded again and then, holding onto the throw, she shuffled to the intercom and pressed the door release.

‘You should really check before you let someone in, you know,’ Tom said pushing the apartment door open.

‘In case someone might try and take advantage of me, you mean?’ She slouched back to the sofa, and sat, curling her feet under her.

‘I bought pizza,’ he said, switching on the oven and shoving two inside without waiting for it to heat up. ‘Ever the rebel,’ he muttered. He’d bought a decent bottle of red wine too and rummaging in one of the drawers he found an opener. ‘A glass of wine?’ Without waiting for an answer, he poured a glass and brought it over to her, holding it out until she unwrapped one hand and took it.

‘I thought it was about time I started repaying your hospitality,’ he said.

Nicola would have preferred if he’d said he would no longer need it but she guessed, until Sean was found, that wasn’t going to happen.

‘You want this at the table,’ Tom asked when the pizza was ready. When she didn’t answer he took it to her, leaving the plate on the sofa beside her and the rest of the bottle of wine on the coffee table.

He sat with his at the dining room table, preferring to eat there than hunched over his food on the couch. He’d have preferred more light to eat by too, but he knew Nicola’s predilection was for the dark and keeping her sweet was necessary. She’d given them something, they needed more. Sean’s life may depend on it.

‘Did you find out anything at the house?’

Tom deep in thought, didn’t hear her question.

‘Tom,’ Nicola said, raising her voice so much that she startled him.
