TWELVE

When we returned to my dad’s house, it was the middle of the night.

My wolf’s nose flared when she caught the alpha’s scent.

“Let’s turn around,” she said, starting to turn. My dad’s scent trailed past us, telling me he’d also shifted and gone into the forest. That left me with just the alpha.

“You know we can’t avoid a confrontation with him,” I reminded her, and she reluctantly gave me control again.

I grabbed my shirt off the dirt where I’d left it and put it on, then strode up to the house like I wasn’t dreading the conversation to come.

The front door was open, and I saw him sitting on the couch before I even walked in.

“You must not be as busy as you claim if you had time to sit here waiting for me,” I remarked, without thinking it through.

“Alaska!” my wolf hissed.

“I know I shouldn’t have said that,” I muttered back.

“I always have time to ensure the safety of my pack.” His eyes were narrowed at me, sweeping up and down my person.

“I’m not a threat to anyone’s safety, unless they try to hurt me.”

“You allowed your mate to wash dishes today.”

He said, “wash dishes,” like it was poison.

“Bash likes to be useful.”

“A man’s place is in the forest, not the kitchen,” the alpha growled back.

I wanted to tell him that a man’s place should be up to the man himself—but knew that would only piss him off. He was high on power, and didn’t give a shit what anyone else thought.

“What would you prefer I do if my mate insists on doing dishes with me, then? It’s not a woman’s place to tell a man what to do.” I dragged his ideology into the conversation, pointing out the insanity of the argument.

The alpha rose off the couch, striding toward me with his face twisted in a snarl. “Don’t mock me, female.”

“It was a valid question, sir.” I threw the sir in there, pretending to be apologetic.

His fist slammed into my face so fast that I didn’t have time to react.

Pain erupted as my nose snapped, and tears immediately leaked from my eyes as I reeled backward.

“If it happens again, I’ll kill your mate, and then you afterward,” the alpha said coldly, turning and striding out of the house. The door slammed behind him, the force of it rattling the thin walls of the old, shitty building.

My palm pressed into my nose, my eyes and blood flowing together as my whole damn face throbbed in pain.

My wolf whimpered inside me.

It was far from the first time I’d had my nose broken, though this one might take the cake for the most painful break.

I dropped to the couch, cradling my face and forcing away the suddenly-raging memories of all the times my dad had beaten me.

Goddess, that shit was overwhelming.

I closed my eyes and forced myself to conjure an image of my room at the Refuge. I hadn’t ever bothered to paint or decorate it, so the images were pretty bland.
