Lisbeth bit her lower lip to keep the choking grief at bay. “Yes, we were.”

He was her hero, always the fun one when she was a little girl. They took trips to the zoo or the amusement park. He continually had big dreams and told her nothing was unattainable, but he forgot the part about hard work and putting in the time to achieve his goals.

“My father was like a flash of lightning, always in motion and with a new adventure on the horizon.”

Then the fire fizzled out, and he was left with the results of never really working a steady job, saving for the future, or seeing past the next big deal.

“He sounds like a fun guy.”

“Yes, my father knew how to have fun.”

Until there was no more fun to be had, and his only option was one last desperate act.

“At least you knew him and spent time with him. It sounds like he cared about you.”

“Yes,” she answered the way Samson expected, but the opposite was true because her father never would’ve done what he did if he cared about her.

She tried to disguise the shuddering breath that escaped, but a second later, Samson shoved the pizza box to the side and enveloped her in his strong, firm arms. “It’s okay, babe.”

She burrowed into him, and although that part of her life would never be okay, being here with Samson right now made it better.

He tilted her head with his forefinger. “Nick can do without me for one night. What do you say we do something fun?”
