Waning Crescent

The waning Crescent Moon is the final point on the lunar cycle when the Moon is still visible at all, before it disappears completely into its Dark days.

This Crescent corresponds to the time of the Winter Solstice, or Yule—the festival of light that serves to remind us that new light, and new life, will come again at Winter’s end. It also corresponds to the compost phase of the growth cycle—when the remaining, decaying plant matter is transformed into nutrients in the soil for the next generation of life to make use of.

Energetically, this is a very powerful time for conquering negative circumstances through release and removal. Magical work related to protection, banishing, and binding troublesome people or situations is favored now.

However, be careful not to adopt an attitude of conflict or battle when it comes to the issues you’re working to resolve. If you see yourself as being engaged in an active fight, you will most likely reinforce the negative conditions, rather than releasing them.

For example, if your goal is to remove a major illness, keep your focus on how you will feel when you are well, rather than on “fighting” how you feel now. This is another instance where keeping the Law of Attraction in mind can really help you shape your magic. If you feel inclined, ask for assistance from the Crone Goddess, whose energies of wisdom and clear thinking are best suited for dealing with endings and removal.

It’s also useful to keep the metaphor of composting in mind here. Although what we are releasing is not desirable or useful to us, it can be transformed into neutral or even beneficial energy in the larger world.

If you think about it, you don’t resent the existence of a banana peel or a rotten tomato simply because you can’t eat them! They may be unpleasant to the senses, but that doesn’t mean they are inherently “bad.” In fact, they can be turned to good if they are allowed to decompose and therefore nourish the soil.

Similarly, everything we release has had its own purpose—including conflicts, illness, and other challenges. What we learn from our struggles is just as useful as what we enjoy about our successes.

For example, let’s say you’re working to recover from a painful breakup of a romantic relationship. You might want to start with a spell to release your attachments to the past, and then move on to work related to healing the feelings that are hurting you right now.

However, don’t put any energy into resentment about what happened, or fear of what’s coming next. Work for acceptance of things as they are, and know that this experience will help you to navigate the next relationship along your path.

If you need to protect yourself from a person who is a harmful influence in your life, you can do a binding spell to keep them out of your way, but don’t wish them harm in return. For one thing, this isn’t necessary for your spellwork to succeed—in fact, negative intent will most likely lead your spell to backfire.
