A cut on her upper arm. A cut on her hip. Two on her wrist. Nichelle might have had zero experience with swords but even she could tell she was being toyed with. Sweat coated her forehead and dripped into her left eye, making her blink twice every couple seconds. Costing her reaction speed. Not that it would have made much of a difference.

Ophelia had pretended to be serious at first, frowning and looking like she was concentrating. The more cuts Nichelle got, the more the other girls smile widened until finally she was laughing as she danced around her, lashing her with the sword only to barely break skin.

“This is the girl the invisible god choose to beat me.” Ophelia laughed and swiped another cut on her arm. Nichelle tried to raise the sword and block her but she was too slow, again. She felt like she was working in slow motion while Ophelia was on fast forward. The effort of lifting her sword wasn’t even worth it anymore, it cost her energy and she couldn’t manage to block a single strike.

“Lea, this is cruel.” Sol said quietly. At first he had seemed content to wait it out. Nichelle wasn’t sure if it was because he couldn’t pick a side or because he already had and knew they would win. Now he seemed to be changing his mind.

“Cruel? I’m not the one who designed the rules, only the one who picked the game.” Ophelia said.

Nichelle knew she wasn’t going to last much longer. A few minutes and she was already tired, the arm holding the sword was dropping and when Ophelia smacked it out of her hand she was glad for the loss of the weight.

“I beat you.” Ophelia glowed with triumph, “Seemed the Herd placed their faith in the wrong chosen one.”

“The prophecy is a sham.” Sol agreed, “Now, can I get her out of here.”

“Before Oedipus eats her?” Ophelia giggled and skipped back to her throne. Nichelle didn’t even have the energy to walk, nevermind skipping.

“Yes.” Sol said sincerely.

Ophelia sighed content and fingered the edge of her blade, “You know the deal. Free the owl and maybe you can try again after.”

Nichelle knew she was being insulted but between her heart beating in her ears and her lungs begging for air she couldn’t summon the energy for a comeback. She braced her hands on her knees and leaned over, trying to catch her breath.

“Best get her out of here before she collapses.” Ophelia laughed and continued to laugh as Sol offered Nichelle his hand.

“I don’t… want your help.” Nichelle panted.

“You have no one else.” Sol said quietly, “Come with me, lets get you cleaned up.”

Nichelle bit her lip and the second her hand touched his she felt her knees give out as the rest of her strength fled.

“Chosen one.” Ophelia was laughing at her still but Nichelle no longer possessed the will to care. Her entire focus was on staying upright and not falling the rest of the way to the ground.
