COMMON CONCERN

My baby seems to turn away each time I try to put the spoon near her mouth. Why does she do this?

There could be a number of reasons why your baby is unwilling to eat. We need to establish several things: Is she awake and alert? Is she hungry? Is she comfortable with new objects being put in and around her mouth? If the latter is a problem, try to desensitize the mouth first. Or she may simply not be ready for spoon-feeds yet. Try postponing it.

If your baby is six months old and you have tried to introduce solids at different times during the day, and you have prepared your baby but she still will not take the spoon, there may be some underlying issues. For example, there are infants who have hyperactive gag reflexes or oral-motor sensitivities that can cause them discomfort when certain textures or tastes are in their mouths. There could also be underlying medical problems, such as reflux or poor sensory organization that are causing your baby’s unwillingness. These kinds of concerns can be helped by a pediatric speech-language pathologist or occupational therapist trained in infant feeding and oral-motor input. Never force-feed your infant, and consult with your pediatrician if ongoing spoon-feedings are not a pleasurable experience.
