Fairness doesnât only mean a higher payment to the author but also more transparency. You can track each bookâs sales online (daily or even hourly if you wish to), receive monthly royalty statements and invoices, and control or change your book price. On the other hand, being with a publishing house might mean you have no insight into actual sales figures. There have been cases where authors followed their book ranks on online platforms but never received royalties for a corresponding number of sold books. As mentioned earlier on, there are certain vanity publishers who ask the authors to pay an advance to them to cover their cost, and it is very well possible that not enough books will ever be sold to cover this amount. This is not the way it should work: Money should always flow towards the author and never from the author, as he is the one writing, marketing and thus ultimately selling his books and should be compensated for it.
