Suddenly we are in this environment where we’re not in control of almost anything. Food appears at certain times, bells ring, distractions are removed. I think on some level the mind perceives that as deeply threatening. You know, I’m just sitting here, and I don’t have the ability to order my world or conditions in ways that I feel will protect me. So it’s more of a fear of the unknown, of what might emerge. It is a vague, unnamed level of resistance that, I think, is ultimately the fear of not being.

This idea that it is ultimately our fear of not being that hinders us is confirmed for many of us when we really ask ourselves, what is so seductive about being distracted when we meditate? What is it in us that just does not want to be bothered? Kate wonders why she does not meditate more. I tell her that many mindfulness teachers suspect that mindfulness fundamentally threatens our sense of who we are. Immediately she agrees—she says it takes her to a place where everything that she feels she is becomes transparent and leaves her feeling personally unimportant. She finds it very unsettling.
