Insane Mode also points the intense amount of research into electric car technology being carried out, particularly in California, U.S.A and China, with lots of partnerships between industry players in both places. It mentions a study carried out by the China Automotive Technology and Research Center in 2016, which showed that there were more than 200 manufacturers of new energy vehicle technology in China alone. Some of these firms are working on portable battery packs that can be charged under a desk at the office or at home. One should note that 200 million plus Chinese are already used to charging batteries for their electric bicycles this way. Also mentioned was a statement by a top General Motors (GM) executive that most of the company’s electric car customers charge at home or at work. I am pointing this out to show that while the challenge of building out charging infrastructure is a big one, work arounds are increasingly possible. In fact, BMW executives have gone out on a limb and stated that public charging infrastructure are not crucial to electric car success. In their opinion, it depends more on customers being willing to have charging ports installed in their homes. They aren’t just making wild assertions, it is backed up by data, in the form of their preliminary Electric Vehicle (EV) testing data, which shows that very few of their electric car customers are using public charging.
