Chapter 8: That Crown Don’t

Make You A Prince

Ricky awoke with a cough. He hadn’t seen Jack since the schoolhouse, shortly after this madness began with three bullets to the back. Since then, time had not been kind to Ricky, as him and a few other regulars from Bart’s, who had been there that fateful night, felt that their best way to survive was to lay low and stay drunk. This was both very easy and difficult for men of their breed. It was a crew that was accustomed to being drunk, Bart’s had been a big part of that and still was, but it was the laying low that caused problems. These were men who had lived life loudly, taking what they wanted, when they wanted, and old habits die-hard. Sure they were scared of the chaos they saw around them, even if they would never admit it to each other, but they also felt secure that the destruction would reign down elsewhere, never upon them.

“Wake up Bobby, wake the fuck up man,” Ricky muttered, pushing the head of his drooling friend off of his shoulder. The two men had closed out the bar the night before and basically stumbled as far as they could from Bart’s before just passing out in an alley a few blocks away. Luckily for them, the weather had been unusually warm for the season and their blackout slumber was relatively comfortable.

Now the late morning sun shone down on the two men, Bobby’s eyes were half open, mostly glazed over from the shenanigans of the night before. There was some light foot traffic at the end of the alley as a few members of the town made their way about their business, but for the most part, it was just the two of them alone with their sweat, hangovers and thoughts.

“Shit man. I barely remember last night,” Bobby began, while wiping the drool from his chin, “where the shit has Jack been? Haven’t heard a word from that crazy bastard since he shot that other bastard in the back.”

“Yeah…funny, I been thinking bout that myself. Maybe we should be more worried about all this crazy shit going on in town lately.” Ricky said this low, half hoping Bobby wouldn’t hear him. He had been going through something of a spiritual crisis in recent weeks and knew he wouldn’t get much sympathy from his crew.

“Nah fuck that. All this shit, it’s happening to these devout motherfuckers, the one’s who piss off the Devil just by loving his creator. We got it right, let’s just keep drinking and doing our thing, I ain’t looking to get caught up in this mess.”

“Yeah, maybe you’re right,” Ricky slowly got up, stretched his legs and told Bobby he was going to grab some food and he would meet up with him later.
