Victoria’s domestic life gradually came to include the Duchess of Kent as well. In 1842, Sir John Conroy, who had been given a title and a pension in return for staying away from court, retired. Miss Lehzen retired that same year after disagreeing with Albert over the raising of the children and her place in the household. Albert then helped Victoria to reconcile with her mother, and the queen and the duchess became close once again.

Later that same year, Victoria and Albert took a twenty-five-minute train ride out of London. Steam locomotives had been around since before Victoria’s reign, but no British royal had ever traveled by train before. Victoria wanted to see what it was like. She was “quite charmed” by the new way to travel, according to a letter she wrote to King Leopold.
