ON THE ROAD

What would it be like to live through the Dust Bowl and to lose your farm? What would you and your family do?

VOCAB LAB

Write down what you think each word means: respiratory, topsoil, unconstitutional, migrant, terrace, and plight.

Compare your definitions with those of your friends or classmates. Did you all come up with the same meanings? Turn to the text and glossary if you need help.

• Imagine that you are the child of an Okie family fleeing the Dust Bowl area of Oklahoma and traveling toward California in hopes of finding work. Research what the circumstances and conditions were like for these children.

• Write a journal or a series of letters home to a relative. Describe what is happening and what you are seeing. What are the attitudes toward you of the people you meet? What are the stories you’ve heard about what California is like? What do you actually find when you get there?

• Write another letter home as if you were a teen traveling around the country by hopping illegal rides on freight trains. What are you seeing and experiencing? What dangers do you face? Where do you sleep and how do you eat? Make your writing as vivid and descriptive as possible.

To investigate more, research narratives from actual migrant kids and teens, perhaps as told to writers and photographers from the federal Writer’s Project or another WPA program. Compare them to your narrative. Is there anything you missed?
