Maya and Godfrey called their show Cabaret for Freedom, and it featured black singers and dancers at a jazz club in New York City. The show was a smashing success on opening night and continued to be a big hit for five straight weeks. The ticket sales of the show helped raised nine thousand dollars for Dr. King’s cause.

Dr. King’s group, the SCLC, asked Maya to become their regional coordinator. Maya happily accepted the job. Her duties included fund-raising, organizing volunteers, and speaking on behalf of the SCLC. After two months, she met Dr. King for the first time. He thanked her for all her hard work. Around this same time, Maya had her first short story published. It appeared in a Cuban magazine called Revolucíon.
