In 1867, he planned a much longer trip. He and Paul went to the United States, one of the few times Jules left Europe in his life. Together they sailed across the Atlantic Ocean on the Great Eastern, a massive steamship. Jules was so amazed by the ship that when they stopped in London, he rowed all around it in a smaller boat so he could get a close look at every part of the huge steamer!
Arriving in New York, they stayed in a fancy hotel on Fifth Avenue. The hotel was the first in the city to have an elevator! Then the brothers traveled up the Hudson River to see the mighty Niagara Falls. Jules loved America. In many of his later books, he included American characters and US locations.
