Jane’s brother James had remarried after his first wife died. His new wife was Mary Lloyd. James and Mary’s first son was born in 1798. At this point, Edward and Elizabeth had five children. Jane was happy to have nieces and nephews. But she was not content being an aunt. She was sad that she did not have a family of her own. Jane was now twenty-two. She was still young enough to get married, but her chances of meeting a husband seemed to be getting slim. How would she support herself if she didn’t have a husband? Jane knew that it was more important than ever for her writing to help her earn a living.

In the spring of 1799, Cassandra returned to Steventon and once again took over the running of the house. Jane was happy to not have to do all the housework herself. In May, Edward invited Jane and Mrs. Austen to travel to the town of Bath with him. He had been ill, and he hoped the waters of the spa there would help.
