A separate fountain for black people

It upset Ida that some black leaders felt black people had to earn the approval of white people. When the National Afro-American Council met in Washington, DC, Ida gave a speech. She criticized Booker T. Washington for agreeing to segregation. Ida said, “If this gathering means anything, it means that we have at last come to a point where we must do something for ourselves—and do it now.” People at the meeting called Ida a “hothead” and booed her.

It was hard knowing that a large group of black people didn’t support her approach to equality. However, it made Ida more determined than ever to continue her fight. Even if that meant making more enemies. Not just with white people. But with black people, too.
