Henry had always treated his workers fairly, but this German system was unlike anything he had seen in the United States. And Henry realized its value. Happy, well-cared-for employees would stay on the job and work hard. They would not be interested in causing trouble for their bosses.

Henry had seen firsthand the violence that could occur when workers and company owners fought. In 1877, some US railroad companies had cut workers’ wages. Angry workers then walked off their jobs—they went on strike. In Pittsburgh, the striking workers and their supporters clashed with National Guard troops, leaving more than twenty people dead. Henry hated the violence and did not want his workers to feel that he did not care for them.
