The Continental Divide
Mapmakers often draw a line to show the Continental Divide running along the crest of the Rocky Mountain ranges. It is called a divide because it divides the eastern from the western United States. When rain and melted snow raise the rivers on the eastern side of the Continental Divide, the rivers flow east into the Atlantic Ocean and the Gulf of Mexico. The rivers on the western side of the divide also fill up with rain and melted snow, but they flow west into the Pacific Ocean.
