Jesse and Zee had two children who survived to adulthood, Jesse Jr. and Mary Susan ( above). Jesse Jr. became a respected lawyer in Kansas City, Missouri.

Jesse’s supporter in the press, John Newman Edwards, published a story about the outlaw’s marriage in the St. Louis Dispatch, where the editor now worked. As always, Edwards was enthusiastic in his prose. The headline ran: “CAPTURED: The Celebrated Jesse W. James Taken at Last. His Captor a Woman, Young, Accomplished, and Beautiful.”

Jesse and Zee spent the first months of their married life in Texas with relatives. Their first child was born in August 1875. They named him Jesse Edwards James, the middle name probably in honor of John Edwards. The couple had three more children: twin sons, born in 1877, who died after only five days, and a daughter, Mary Susan, born in 1879.
