Chapter 5

The Japan Years

While he was building his career as an architect, Frank had spent most of his time working. Kitty raised the children on her own. Frank and Kitty were no longer close. He had met a woman named Mamah Borthwick Cheney while designing a house for her and her husband. Frank fell in love with Mamah. He asked Kitty for a divorce, but she said no.

A German publisher named Ernst Wasmuth offered to create a book about Frank’s work. Frank wanted to go to Germany to work with Ernst. And just like his own father had years earlier, Frank left his family. He took Mamah with him. In Germany, he gathered all the drawings, photographs, and floor plans of the buildings he had designed. The book, known as the “Wasmuth portfolio,” was a huge hit. It was published in 1910 and made Frank famous all over the world. He was forty-three years old and had been designing buildings for twenty years.
