On the twenty-first day, tiny gusts of wind rippled the water. The gusts became a breeze. And the breeze filled out the sails. The ships began to move. At last, they were heading to South America. From there, the search for el paso would start.

Now there was no talk of mutiny. The crew looked forward to reaching land. For in those days, life on a ship was tough. Sailors had no privacy—they didn’t even have rooms. They slept jammed together on deck. When it got dark, rats and cockroaches crawled over their bodies. When it rained, the crew got drenched, as did all their belongings.
