Chapter 5
Early Writing Career
In 1834, John Allan died after a lengthy illness. He was a rich man. But he didn’t leave a single penny to Edgar. John’s will did not even mention his foster son, who was still struggling to earn a living.
In 1835, Edgar became an editor for the Southern Literary Messenger magazine, back in Richmond. It was the first of several editing jobs he would hold during his life. An editor at a newspaper or magazine has many different responsibilities. They include thinking of story ideas, assigning stories to writers, and then making sure what is written is written well and has all the facts right. Many editors, like Edgar, are also writers.
