Chapter 7

Race to the Finish

Naturally, Aleck was excited about this discovery. He started making sketches of what the telephone might look like. But he also felt guilty because he was spending so much time working on the telephone. So Aleck wrote Mr. Hubbard a letter to explain what had been occupying his time. “Dear Mr. Hubbard, I have accidentally made a discovery of the very greatest importance,” he began.

Mr. Hubbard, however, was still not impressed. He even hinted that if Aleck didn’t give up the telephone, he could forget about becoming Mabel’s boyfriend!

Aleck wrote Hubbard another letter. In it he said, “If she [Mabel] does not come to love me well enough to accept me whatever my profession or business may be—I do not want her at all.”

Luckily, Aleck didn’t need to worry about Mabel’s feelings for him. She had come to love Aleck very deeply. On her eighteenth birthday—November 25, 1875—she agreed to marry him. Mabel, however, had one request. She wanted Aleck to drop the “k” in his nickname, because she thought Alec sounded more American. That was okay with Alexander Graham Bell, who from then on was known as Alec. The two married on July 11, 1877.
