In this simple model of an oxygen atom, you can see the cluster of eight neutrons and eight protons that make up the nucleus.

Isotopes

In 1913, British chemist Frederick Soddy found that atoms of the same element are actually not all identical, as they can have different weights. These different forms of the same atom were named “isotopes” by Soddy’s cousin, Dr. Margaret Todd. Scientists later found that different isotopes of an atom have different numbers of neutrons. So, for example, oxygen normally has 8 neutrons, but some oxygen atoms have 9 or 10.
