CHAPTER 61

“Mister Freeman, have you any observations to share about activity on the lake?”

“The sound of cannons early in the morning and at dusk is the most disturbing behavior.”

“Would you be referring to the freedom cannon the neighbor mentioned?” Robin said with a smile.

Colt grinned and said, “Every day, he fires a cannon at daybreak and one at dusk. Since I have to get up early when I am on the air, I cherish the peace and quiet of this place.”

“Have you lodged a complaint with the police?”

“I spoke to Captain Bullhead of your police force. He said that if there were no witnesses, my complaint would go nowhere. He then politely ushered me out of his office. It was a relief to get away from the cigarette smoke. I hope I haven’t offended you by speaking so bluntly about Captain Bullhead?”

“Has Mr. Jacksaloff ever invited you to be on his show?”

“He has not, but he says that I have been invited. You heard him on the recording falsely claim that his neighbor had taken him to court. He has been to court for defaming people, but I was not a party to those lawsuits.”

“Other than the cannons, have you seen or heard anything?”

“I heard nothing else but the sound of a dog barking and whimpering.”

“The dog was whimpering, you say. Did you see anything?”

“I have not seen anything relevant to your inquiry.”

“Alright, then. Thanks for your time, Mr. Freeman.”

“Please call me Colt. I was pleased to make your acquaintance.”

Robin stuck out her hand and Colt shook it, holding on for a moment while their eyes met.

The dog lifted his head and sniffed at Robin as a goodbye.

“I love that dog.”

“You are welcome to visit him and me at any time, whether your purpose is official or just for a glass of pure Maine lake water and a chat.”

“I thank you for both.”

Colt opened the door for her and gave her a last smile.

“Have a good one, as you say here in Maine.”

“You too, as we say here in Maine.”

Robin walked up the dirt path to the main road. She looked over her shoulder to see Colt standing in the doorway of his house smiling at her.

Robin smiled and thought, “It is a shame he is twice my age.”
