After twenty minutes, Clay was getting impatient as he waited for her to return from her room with her belongings. He shook his head. What is taking her so long? What trouble is she getting into now?

The door to the passenger elevator slid open and an elderly couple got off. Clay asked, “Did you happen to see a tall blonde woman waiting to take the elevator?”

“Sorry, no. We didn’t see anyone.”

Clay thanked them and watched as they took the back exit to the parking lot. Mackenzie still was not back, and Clay observed that none of the other elevators were descending from the fourth floor.

He punched the up button and rode the elevator to the fourth floor to see what her delay was. He knocked, but there was no answer. He went to room 412 and knocked again. A man opened the door.

Clay flashed his detective’s badge and explained himself. “I’m looking for a woman who is a guest in the connecting room.”

“Sorry, Detective, there’s no one here, and I don’t know who the person is in the connecting room.”

A woman showed herself behind the man and spoke. “I’m his wife. Is there a problem? You’re welcome to come in and see for yourself that no one else is in here.”

Clay entered the empty room. He went to the connecting door to see if he could get through to Mackenzie’s room, but the door from 410 was locked.

Clay apologized for inconveniencing them and went back to 410. He knocked again. Still no answer. He used his cell phone to dial Mackenzie, but she did not answer.

He thought, I must have missed her when she was going down on one of the elevators and I was going up in another one. She’s got to be in the lobby.
