as a daydreamer is wont to do

in the market of the Sacred Valley

under the tawny skirts of the foothills

buying pink salt & chocolate &

pigments for my darling. I’m patronizing

because it seems only today

I scaled above the lost tourists of Machu Picchu

to look down upon—literally—a great,

ruined civilization. If the villagers were alive,

it would be a privilege to be alive.

Perhaps I believe instinctively that I’m not

doing some good, not living

a life of right conduct. Like, I could

be writing an animated film

starring a pineapple of extra energy

& donating the billions to charity.

Against advice by the wise

to Let Three Days Pass

before tendering a plan,

I let three cars pass

before pushing through an exit

on the freeway in a loathsome state

of silent alarm, home.
