I don’t have to worry though. I pass Sargent a few times in the hall that afternoon, and he doesn’t even glance at me.

At home I try to sort out all my homework for the evening. Five pages of science questions. Ten pages of history reading and a page of questions. Ten pages of math questions. Two pages of geography questions. And from health class, a chapter of reading and a page of questions.

Come on. Seriously?

At dinner I wasn’t going to bring up our new vice-principal. I wasn’t in the mood to listen to Grandpa talk about how much he likes Principal Stone’s methods or the importance of order. But it turns out he’s buddies with Sargent’s dad.

“He’s going to be a welcome addition to the school,” he says.

“I don’t know,” I say. “It’s even more depressing with him around. But on the bright side, it looks like my friend Dorothy will be elected president. She has some great ideas. Better cafeteria food, less homework, more extracurricular activities.”

“What do you want, a parade every day?” Grandpa mutters. “You’re at school to learn.”

I try to stay calm. “Kids learn better when they’re rested and well fed. And we learn through extracurricular activities as well as classroom subjects. My friend Reza is putting together a school newspaper at home because he wasn’t allowed to use a classroom or school equipment. Principal Stone won’t even let him distribute it at school!”

“Really? That’s awful!” Mom says.

“Well, he was probably planning to trash-talk Principal Stone,” Grandpa says. “The principal was right to shut him down. And isn’t Reza a girl’s name?”

“No, Dad, it’s not,” says Mom, clearly irritated. “And who said he was going to trash-talk Principal Stone? Anyway, there’s nothing wrong with being critical. As long as you get your facts right. It encourages debate, which is healthy if done respectfully. Principal Stone sounds more like a dictator than a good leader.” Mom flashes me a sympathetic look. “People are also more productive when they feel heard and valued.”

“Everybody’s coddled too much these days,” Grandpa grumbles. “What’s this?” He pokes at his food.

Mom sighs. “Chicken pot pie.”

“I know that. What’s the green stuff?”

“It’s thyme, Dad. It won’t kill you.”

“I like plain food,” he says.

She rolls her eyes. “No danger of anybody being coddled around here.”
